Frequently Asked Questions About Afterpay App

Quick answers to everything US shoppers need to know about Afterpay's payment plans, fees, and account management.

How does Afterpay's Pay in 4 work?

Pay in 4 splits your purchase into four equal, interest-free installments. You pay the first 25% at checkout. The remaining three payments are automatically deducted from your linked debit or credit card every two weeks over a six-week period. There is no interest charged as long as you pay on time.

What is the maximum spending limit?

Afterpay does not have a universal fixed limit. Your spending limit is dynamically determined based on your payment history, account age, and creditworthiness. New users generally start around $600, which can increase with responsible use. For Pay Monthly, merchants typically set ranges from $200 to $5,000.

Does using Afterpay affect my credit score?

Pay in 4 uses a soft credit check that does not appear on your credit report and does not impact your score. Pay Monthly requires a hard credit check, which may cause a small, temporary dip. Pay in 4 transactions are generally not reported to credit bureaus.

What happens if I miss a payment?

Your account is immediately frozen — you cannot make new purchases until you pay what is owed. After a 10-day grace period, a $10 late fee applies for orders over $40, with an additional $7 if still unpaid after another week. Total late fees never exceed 25% of the order value.

Can I use Afterpay in physical stores?

Yes. The Afterpay Card is a virtual Visa card in the app that works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. You can tap to pay at any store that accepts Visa contactless payments.

Who is eligible to use Afterpay?

You must be 18 or older, a US resident, have a valid US-issued Visa or Mastercard, a US mobile phone number, and pass a soft credit check. International visitors cannot create a US Afterpay account.

Can I reschedule a payment?

In some cases, yes. Eligible users can reschedule a payment within a 7-day window before the due date using the app. Not all payments qualify, and you cannot reschedule once the due date has passed.
